Synopsis of The New People by Meriol Trevor:

In the ramshackle last days of the decaying Roman Empire, a girl carried off in the night found love and a new life among the strange uncouth Saxons, conquerors of her ancient land of Britain. Slowely, precariously, a new civilisation was coming to birth, with churches and farms and friendliness, so that Philo among her babies did not regret the old vanished days. But savagery and violence were all around and even the new Christian people lived tensley, pulled both ways.
